Workout OutsideAlthough the gym gives you a convenient place to fit in a workout and a lot of options for exercise, sometimes the confines of four walls can feel like too much. When the weather is lovely, there’s no reason to keep your workout inside. A lot of cardio exercises were made for the outdoors. Heading outdoors lets you get a breath of fresh air and see beautiful scenery.

Swimming

Sure, you can hop in an indoor, heated pool to swim a few laps. But there are few better ways to cool off on a hot summer day than by jumping into a pool outside. If you live near a natural body of water that has a lifeguard on duty, you can get your cardio workout in there.

Swimming is one of the most perfect exercises. It gives you a cardio workout while strengthening a number of muscle groups, including your arms, back, and shoulders. The water provides a support cushion for your joints, making swimming a low impact, but very effective exercise.

Running

There are a lot of places you can go for a run out of doors. If you live in a city, you can run around city blocks. That gives you the opportunity to people watch while you get in your work out.

A park is also an ideal place to go for a run. Many city and suburban parks have trails that are marked with the distance. If you choose a wooded trail, you’ll not only get to see some nature as you run, you’ll also get to enjoy shade on a hot day.

Running burns calories. It also strengthens the thigh muscles, butt muscles and calf muscles. When you run, make sure to keep your posture upright. Comfortable running shoes that provide enough support are essential.

Bicycling

Once you learn to ride a bike, you never forget. Going for a bike ride is a great way to see the sights and get from point A to B while also getting in a good workout. When going for a ride, sit up straight on the seat and keep your stomach tucked in through the ride for the greatest effect. Bicycling is great for the hamstrings as well as the chest and back muscles.

There are a lot of places outdoors that you can go for a bike ride. A park is a great setting, just make sure you keep alert for runners and pedestrians on the trails. Many cities also have bike lanes on the roads that make riding a bike in the street safer.

When you’re just getting started on a bike, it’s helpful to choose flat terrain. But as you get more used to riding, you might want to try cycling up hills to add to the intensity of your workout.  Always be safe when riding and remember to wear a helmet.
